Functional Electrical Stimulation Sydney
What is it?
Functional Electrical Stimulation produces muscle contractions via electrodes placed on the skin. Our Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists may use electrical stimulation to stimulate nerve and muscle fibres to help activate very weak muscles or to increase endurance.
There is strong evidence that electrical stimulation is beneficial for:
- Strengthening muscles as a substitute for muscle activity
- Gait retraining
- Maintaining joint range of motion following orthopaedic procedures
- Increase local blood circulation
- Improve sensory recovery
- Used alongside Botulinum toxin injections to assist with optimising active range in upper and lower limbs and reducing and spasticity.
As this therapy is thought to promote neuroplasticity it is recommended as an intensive method of therapy and a specific goal directed program will be tailored by your therapist in conjunction with you and your child in order to identify ways that this therapy can be built into your everyday life.
