NDIS Early Childhood Approach
What is the Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) Approach?
Previously called Early Childhood Early Intervention (or NDIS ECEI), Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) is all about providing the right support to help young children with developmental delays or disabilities grow and thrive – early childhood intervention is a term used to describe the support services or programs used to support them to reach their full potential.
Here’s some important facts you need to know about the NDIS Early Childhood Approach:
- It's for children under the age of six with a developmental delay or global developmental delay
- It's for children under the age of nine with a disability. Some disabilities such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or Hearing Loss
- It can include mainstream (non-NDIS) supports, NDIS supports, or a mix of both
- Even if your child doesn't fully meet the definition of developmental delay but has developmental concerns, they can still get support
- It focuses on putting your family at the center of all services and supports
- No diagnosis is needed - support is available without it. If you find your child needs further support, an early childhood partner can help you apply for an NDIS plan if your child meets the eligibility criteria

Families can contact their Early Childhood Partners if they or others involved in your child’s daily care (childcare, preschools etc) have concerns. Your ECI partner will provide you with information and local supports that will assist you with the unique developmental needs of your child through the Early Childhood Approach. They will guide you through the NDIS application process if applicable. They will also support you by:
- Making an assessment of your child's developmental progress
- Provide short term intervention support
- Support and facilitate ECI (NDIS) access and funding for a child with more severe and / or permanent intervention support needs
- Connect families to community supports if appropriate
